Synopsis

Kira Yamato is a young student on the neutral colony Heliopolis, when it is attacked by ZAFT, the armed forces of the PLANT which searches for the new prototypes for the Earth Alliance’s Mobile Suits, the Strike, Aegis, Buster and Duel.

This is the beginning for Kira and his friends, on board with the crew of a terrain cruiser called the Archangel,of a flight across space, all round the earth, to avoid the forces of ZAFT.

Produced in 2002, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed is a testament to the desire of Sunrise to renew this saga to a new generation of viewers. Following the example of TV series produced after 1994, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed is set in an alternative universe, totally independent of the UC saga. For this reason you do not have to have seen any previous Gundam series to enjoy it.

Created by Mitsuo Fukuda, the series wanted to be the source of a whole new saga and seems to have fulfilled this goal nicely, since in 2004 Sunrise created the follow-up, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (currently being aired in Japan).

Once again set around the troubles between the inhabitants of Earth, here named « Naturals » and the inhabitants of the space colonies (the PLANT) named « Coordinators », Mobile Suit Gundam Seed again plunges us into a conflict that spreads across space. With the difference that instead of being politically orientated as in the UC saga in this universe the troubles are far more genetic, even racial.

The Coordinators are, in effect, genetically modified humans born with increased physical and intellectual capabilities. Scared by the emergence of this new breed of humans, the “non-modified” humans called naturals, resort to violence against this new breed of humans to stop them replacing the Naturals as the only race of humans.

Despite the wait, this series has been a great success during all of its screening on Japanese television. This success is explained by the extraordinary richness of the universe it is set in and by successfully integrating the scientific elements that made series like Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Z Gundam a success.

A delicious cocktail of action and romance, of political intrigue and ideology, so particular care was taken to make this series even more popular than its predecessors. The Japanese public weren’t disappointed either, and named the series the « Best series of 2004 »: Mobile Suit Gundam Seed in effect won the Anime Grand Prix 2004.
