African Community
The African Community
is an economic and military group of nations in the far
north of the African continent. Openly support the PLANTs
and categorically refuse to join the Earth Alliance, the
African Community is nowadays a territory of ZAFT. Despite
this there are a few pockets of resistance here and there,
like for example the “Desert Dawn”, who fight
for their freedom from the occupying ZAFT forces. The “Desert
Dawn” themselves, based in the Liberian desert, continue
to struggle against Andrew Waltfeld’s troops.
The Earth Alliance
An
international coalition formed by the original PLANT sponsors
and their terrestrial allies to fight against ZAFT. The
Earth Alliance, far from being a politically united entity,
is more an alliance of powerful nations, who regard each
other as potential enemies but have a common enemy for the
moment. The Atlantic Federation, Eurasian federation and
the Republic of East Asia are the main members of the Alliance.
These dominant nations, in addition to being the most powerful
in the Alliance, also invested heavily in the construction
of the PLANTs.
The Union of South
Africa as well as the United States of South America, do
not have a lot of power and were forcibly annexed by the
Atlantic Federation at the start of the war.
The
Earth Alliance was formed on the 7th of February in Cosmic
Era year 70, two days after the end of negotiations between
the PLANTs and their sponsor nations were disturbed by bombings
in the lunar city of Copernicus. The Alliance was formed
to replace the United Nations, whose dreams died when Copernicus
was bombed, and is lead by a moderate Secretary General.
However, in reality, it’s only a military alliance
that is dominated by the Atlantic Federation and the original
sponsors of the PLANTs.
The headquarters of
the Alliance, JOSH-A, can be found in Alaska. At the start
of Cosmic Era year 70, their other strongholds included
the spaceport of Kaohsiung in Taiwan, the spaceport of Panama
in Central America, the spaceport of Victoria in Africa
and the lunar base Ptolemaeus.
The Atlantic Federation
The
original builders of the Archangel and the Gundams, the
Atlantic Federation is the leader of the Earth Alliance.
Before the war, the Atlantic Federation was already the
most influential nation amongst the sponsors that allowed
the construction of the PLANTs and it was also them who
prevented the Coordinators have a stable economy. When the
United Nations’ influence collapsed after the attack
on the lunar city of Copernicus, the Atlantic Federation
took the initiative and created what would eventually become
the Earth Alliance. They then seized control of the Earth
Alliance before declaring war against the PLANTs.
The Atlantic Federation,
originally formed by the United Kingdom and North America,
began to expand little by little by annexing the United
States of South America at the start of the war. Their military
headquarters, JOSH-A, is also the general headquarters for
the Earth Alliance.
Panama
The Eurasian Federation
The Eurasian Federation
is one of the leading nations in the Earth Alliance. Despite
being a long standing rival of the Atlantic Federation,
after much negotiating, a delicate alliance was arranged
between the two powers. Formed by the nations of Europe
and Northern Asia, the Eurasian Federation is controlled
by a federal council dominated by the European members of
the Federation. They also have an active stronghold in space
by the name of Artemis, situated on Lagrange point 3, which
becomes a battleground between the Strike Gundam and the
Gundams stolen by Zaft.
The United States of South America
This nation controls
the majority of Central and South America and before the
war, collaborated with the Atlantic Federation to construct
the Mass Driver, a ramp for launching crafts into space,
in Panama.
Before the start of the war, the United States of South
America secretly agreed to send food and manufactured goods
therefore they refused to join the Earth Alliance when war
broke out. However, on the 19th of February in Cosmic Era
year 79, the Alliance’s armed forces invaded and the
Atlantic Federation annexed the United States of South America.
Orb
This nation is situated
in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean and is composed
of numerous islands of varying sizes. Despite it’s
size and lack of natural resources, the Orb Union is very
technologically advanced and has a strong armed force. As
well as it’s advanced technology, they are powered
by geothermal energy produced by a number of active volcanoes
in the region and have a policy of non-discrimination towards
coordinators that helped to attract a number of talented
scientists. Orb has its own “Mass Driver”, an
electromagnetic catapult capable of sending crafts into
space, and its own space colony, Heliopolis, which has the
task of providing raw materials for Orb.
In Orb’s political
system, the power is shared between an assembly of elected
officials and representatives from the five noble families
who originally ruled over the Archipelago. The council’s
president, Uzumi Nara Athha, declared the neutrality of
their nation at the start of the war between the PLANTs
and the Earth Alliance. However there are disputes between
the different noble families and certain government officials
didn’t hesitate to secretly help the Earth Alliance
develop Mobile Suits of their own…
Kingdom
of Scandinavia
A neutral nation of
little importance, in terms of it’s economic and military
power, the Kingdom of Scandinavia is the birth place of
Siegel Clyne, the ex-president of the PLANT supreme council.
Equatorial Union
This group is an economic
union of the powerful equatorial nations in south-east Asia.
Each member of the Equatorial Union is independent with
it’s own military and governments. However, the Union
has to stay completely neutral in the war because, in reality,
members of the Union have financial agreements with both
the Earth Alliance and the PLANTs.
Oceania Union
This territory is
mainly made up by Australia and New Zealand. Being one of
the nations that did not financially sponsor the PLANTs,
nor having any financial interest in them, the Oceania Union
didn’t take part in the creation of the Earth Alliance.
On the other hand, in Cosmic Era year 68, they began to
discretely engage in trade with the PLANTs. On the 20th
of February Cosmic Era year 70, the Oceania Union officially
declared it’s support for the PLANTs in it’s
attempt to resist the Earth Alliance. They also allowed
ZAFT to build the Carpentaria base, in the north of Australia,
which acts as the main base for ZAFT on the Earth.
